What’s it about?

Ones upon a time during a past internship, I worked on concept art for a subscription car wash service. A fun but short-lived project.

Research on visuals

Setting the visual
tone

Our project manager proposed creating a 3D video for the concept. While my fellow intern focused on character design, I took on the environments, since I had some experience with perspective drawing.

First, we needed a consistent visual style. Something whimsical and fun yet simple enough to translate into 3D. I gathered inspiration and created a mood board to guide our direction.

Sketching environments

Placing the
characters into
context

After my fellow intern created the characters, I began working on the environments. The story follows a dad and his two daughters taking a trip, where the car gets dirty. At the car wash, the dad struggles to pay with coins but then discovers a subscription-based service that eases his worries. I created multiple drawings: their home (the video’s start), a highway overview, the car wash exterior and side (to aid 3D depth), and the car wash interior.

Adding some
colour

Although the project was discontinued, I created three style frames in Adobe Photoshop to capture the mood the 3D video would have conveyed.

In the end, it was a lot of fun to make perspective sketches. It helped keep my drawing skills sharp.
